Un hombre libre y leal
¿Una semblanza de Jesús Arellano?, ¿Un recuerdo del profesor? Nunca asistí a sus clases en la Universidad, tampoco escuché una palabra suya en una conferencia, ni en cualquier otro acto magistral.
Mi relación con don Jesús fue siempre de tú a ud; y de ud le traté hasta el final de su vida, no obstante el tiempo transcurrido desde nuestro primer encuentro, allá por los años 1951-52, estrenando yo Universidad.
Y el tratamiento jamás ha supuesto una barrera, para la amistad, la confianza, la intimidad.
Y comienzo por la “amistad”, porque Jesús Arellano fue sobretodo un “amigo”. Un “amigo” en el más noble y profundo sentido de la palabra. Un “amigo” de los que dice la Escritura que quien lo encuentra, encuentra un tesoro. Un “amigo” que buscó siempre el verdadero bien para los amigos: ayudarles a descubrir la Verdad; ayudarles a encontrarse con Cristo.
Escribió poco, muy poco; y en más de una ocasión he sentido en mi alma que no le perdonaba esa “abstinencia”. ¿Por qué?
No le escuché conferencias; pero sí he vivido charlas y conversaciones suyas. Porque sus charlas y conversaciones se “vivían”, no se escuchaban. Y en todas he encontrado una invitación clara, neta, para pensar, y pensar en libertad, con libertad. Y digo bien pensar, no imaginar, ni dejarse llevar por sentimientos e ilusiones sin contacto con la realidad.
Y en pensar en libertad, buscando la verdad, ya es vivir, de algún modo, la eternidad en el tiempo, que era lo que él verdaderamente anhelaba.
Jesús Arellano ha reflejado su espíritu en estas líneas de escrito sobre los Reyes Magos.
“Pero la Epifanía no es sólo un fue, sino un es. No es un mero ayer, sino un siempre, un ahora. Iesus Christus heri et hodie; ipse et in saecula. “Jesucristo es ayer y hoy: es siempre” (San Pablo, Hebr, 13, 8).
A menudo entendemos mal la Escritura. Mal, por deficiencia. Nosotros, los hombres, andamos cargados por la tierra con los ojos cargados de tiempo, teñidos de tiempo, hechos para ver en el tiempo. Apenas alcanzamos a entrever lo que significa esta sencilla palabra: siempre. Lo concebimos, a lo sumo, como una duración indefinida, un tiempo que no se acaba. Cuando a la verdad es un presente eterno.
Manejamos suficientemente bien el ayer, el mañana, el hoy, para decir nuestras cosas. El siempre lo empleamos cuando queremos romper el esquema temporal de lo pasajero, lo vulnerable y caduco, lo huidizo. El siempre lo empleamos, por ejemplo, cuando queremos decir el amor. Porque en el amor el tiempo no tiene sentido. Decir: “te amo hoy” es una incongruencia. Decir: “te amo hoy” es una redundancia. Porque en el “te amo” el hoy, el mañana y el ayer se han concentrado en el eterno siempre. Cuando amamos vivimos un momento de eternidad”. (Los Reyes Magos).
Jesús Arellano fue un reflejo de la eternidad en el tiempo de Sevilla; en el particularísimo tiempo eterno de Sevilla.
Metafísico, poeta. Poeta, como buen metafísico -¿acaso cabe una mente metafísica lejos de un corazón de poeta, aunque a veces el metafísico ni siquiera sea consciente de ser poeta? Y su corazón amante de poeta se expresó de manera conmovedora en sus “Poemas del hombre y de la tierra”.
“Ayer se fueron los poetas.
De pronto, el alba
se sintió vacía de latidos.
Era que ellos no estaban ya.
Murió la llama;
no había ya la sangre de que se vive”
Ha concluido su carrera. Un día recibió el encargo de Dios, y de Josemaría Escrivá de sembrar amor de Dios entre los hombres de Sevilla, siendo él “opus Dei”, “obra de Dios”. Abrió la Residencia de Guadaira, en la calle Canalejas. Sembró a manos llenas. Y el Señor le concedió tal abundancia de “semillas” que anunció su muerte con este cantar:
“Me moriré cargado de semillas
como tierra entregada y fruto abierto,
podrido en las auroras
para dar azucenas a los cielos”
Y con la amistad, la confianza. Jesús Arellano fue un hombre con quien se podía abrir el corazón sin temor alguno. Y que en los consejos o comentarios que hacía, con la sabiduría de la enseñanza, iba siempre la comprensión, el ánimo, con palabras claras, firmes, nunca dobles. Y vivía con el amigo todos los inviernos.
“Cuando pase el invierno,
me acercaré a mi Dios para cantarle
las rosas de la nueva primavera”.
En amistad y confianza, su labor universitaria –Jesús Arellano era “Universidad”, en el sentido más pleno, y más profundo- y abría el espíritu de sus confidentes a horizontes siempre nuevos; sin jamás apagar una llama que aun humeaba, ni arrojar lejos una caña quebrada. Convencido, como estaba, de que a todo lo que ocurre en el tiempo se puede encontrar una solución si se mira y contempla con ojos de eternidad. Con la mirada de ojos limpios que observan la realidad con la amorosa mirada de los Magos al Niño Jesús, y con la luz de la estela luminosa que guía el andar de los Magos:
“En nosotros habrá quedado prendido, al menos, un jirón de ella, una nueva limpieza en la mirada, lista para alcanzar, en uno de los aspectos de su entera belleza, la visión del misterio de Cristo” (Los Reyes Magos).
Y en el “misterio de Cristo” se encontró Jesús Arellano con su espíritu, dolorido y con paz en la tierra; ya gozoso para siempre en el Cielo.
Tuve que convencerle para que aceptase la dedicación de mi “Canto y elogio a Sevilla”. Y así lo hice: “A Jesús Arellano Catalán, maestro de libertad, sevillano en espíritu; en amistad y agradecimiento”
En Sevilla descubrió la intimidad divina de todo lo creado. Y el silencio de Dios en la creación. El amoroso silencio divino. Otro de los milagros de la luz y del silencio de Sevilla, que hace posible que nunca muera la alegría: “por la que Dios se hizo milagro/ en los ojos del hombre”.
“¡Primavera del aire, mi Sevilla!
Beso de claridades
En cielo y en azul. Brisa y aroma
Con noticia de rosas y de ángeles.
Danza del corazón. Música virgen.
Y silencio.

¡Qué maravilla,
los silencios sonoros
de mi Sevilla!
No sé las aportaciones que sus escritos, inéditos hasta la fecha y que espero saldrán un día a la luz, podrán ofrecer al pensamiento de los filósofos que los estudien y analicen. No sé si ha conseguido llegar al “ser” sin dejar el “tiempo”; si ha conseguido que el “ser” llene de sentido el tiempo; o que el “tiempo” se pierda en una “nada” que no existe. No lo sé. Sólo sé que Jesús Arellano estará en mi memoria y en mi corazón hasta que también yo dé el último paso. Y que en mi alma, el “tiempo” de Jesús Arellano se hace “eternidad”.
Y una última palabra en desagravio, por los dolores y las penas que en toda su labor de buen “sembrador” de semillas de amor, comprensión, eternidad, ansias de verdad, anhelos de descubrir la Verdad, de descubrir a Cristo, se ha podido encontrar –y se ha encontrado quizá a veces donde menos lo pensaba- a lo largo de su camino. Él sabe ya que cualquier espina florece ante la mirada de Dios. Hoy –un “hoy” que ya es “siempre”- dará gracias también por esas “espinas”, que saboreó en su lealtad a Dios, a los hombres.
Ojalá que en mi tumba,
en losa de vulgar piedra y barata,
un solo amigo con verdad pudiera
escribir el pronombre
a que mi corazón aspira:
-Era un hombre leal.
Yo ya lo he escrito.
Y me ha atrevido a añadir: y Libre.
Libre, porque ha vivido siempre de una honda Fe, y había arrancado de sí mismo la oscuridad del pecado, y de la razón que se obstina en encerrarse en sí misma.
Libre, porque sabía en Quien esperaba, y sólo en Cristo esperaba.
Libre, porque su corazón se había liberado hasta de la sombra de cualquier resentimiento, de cualquier pena; en gracia de su maravillosa teoría del “arrepentimiento”, que recompone el fundamento y las raíces existenciales, y hasta, de alguna forma, esenciales, del hombre.
Libre, porque sus “miserias” –y ¡ay del hombre que no es consciente de sus miserias!-, jamás le impidieron hablar con Dios cara a cara, como un amigo.
Y el epitafio completo lo dejo así:
-Jesús Arellano, hombre libre y leal, en la eternidad de Dios.

Biografía
Ernesto Juliá Díaz (Ferrol, 1934). Abogado y ordenado sacerdote en 1962, su labor pastoral le ha llevado a distintos países del mundo: Italia, donde ha residido desde 1956 hasta 1992, Australia, Filipinas, Taiwan, Kenya, Nigeria, Estados Unidos, Puerto Rico, Inglaterra, Francia, Bélgica, Holanda, Portugal, Suiza. Ha escrito en medios de comunicación italianos y españoles. Colaboró semanalmente en ABC durante ocho años. Ha publicado varios coleccionables en “Mundo Cristiano”. Ha participado en congresos y reuniones de espiritualidad, con profesores de la talla de Giovanni Colombo, Ignacio de la Potterie; Hans Urs von Baltasar, Inos Biffi, José Luis Illanes, Eugenio Corecco, etc. Tiene entre otros libros: Un anhelo de vida y El renacer de cada día. Ensayos y relatos breves además de varios libros de espiritualidad: Reflexiones sobre la Navidad, Cuatro encuentros con Cristo, Con Cristo resucitado.
